Position at the Microstakes
In an nutshell, position doesn’t mean as much at the microstakes poker online . When I say microstakes, I mean the micro micro stakeslike the .01/.02 and .02/.05 blind games. Now, it’s not to be said that position isn’t important at all, but it’s far less important, and I’m going to give you the reason why. First of all, the level is filled with different than your average online poker player. Many recreational players who don’t really get into poker strategy will play at these levels. And of course you have your everyday donks as the multitude of the player populous. Now there are distinct characteristics of this type of player. Namely, they tend to think one dimensionally. That is, they think of their hand and the flop. Not their hand, your hand, and the flop. For this reason, your casino online positional plays won’t make as much of an impact. Your big blind steals are nearly pointless if you don’t have a hand to back them up with. Since the rationale is that a few more cents is such a small amount, you’ll get called more often than you’ll get the blinds. And besides, they’re not worth as much at these stakes. The other phenomenon you’ll notice is that the percentage of players to the flop is incredibly high at these stakes, usually ranging close to 50% per hand; yet another indicator that many of these players aren’t taking into consideration position. However, while you can’t make positional plays, you can still use position to your advantage to open pots with your hand ranges. In a highly limped pot, you’ll be able to maximize value by overbetting your premium hands in position and thus exploiting the weaker players who aren’t thinking about what you might have.
